I wrote a grant application last July to start Project SUCCESS: Spirometry-Urged Cessation through Counseling, Education & Sustained Suppport. It was funded and is being co-led by me and Paul Enright, MD, a pulmonologist and allergist in Tucson, AZ. It involves my creating a team of RNs, RRTs and pharmacists all trained and certified to conduct spirometry. They will conduct clincs for 3 hours twice a month at two different locations, priority given to smokers (current and former) and those with chronic cough and/or breathing problems. We will also offer resources and counseling in smoking cessation and have a COPD Ed Day annually and Breathing Support Groups. The project is a pilot and will start at two locations in Honolulu & we hope to spread it & communicate with other coalitions to help them launch their own programs if they're interested. There does seem to be significant interest & I am getting inquiries from Texas and others. We're very pleased at how things are developing and have received a lot of support from many.
