Whether they should remain or not is a matter of opinion - personally I'm not all that worried either way. Chairs would be more practical, whereas the pews have the advantage of being already in place.

No-one's trying to justify the existence of the church building and no-one needs to.
I agree that the question of access can be addressed without seriously affecting the interior of the building.
What's needed is to maintain it as a living place of worship and a centre of community life, as well as retaining its heritage.
