Appearing periodically until race day, we're launching a new feature which will include a mile by mile preview of the Mount Desert Island Marathon route and strategies that will help participants successfully navigate the course.
We'll also provide ideas for things to see and do over marathon week and of course, insider tips on great places to eat, drink and have fun while visiting Mt. Desert Island.
Although it might seem to late by mile 19 to be talking about what you should wear on Marathon day. We really should talk to you about this. The most common mistake we see is people who are completely overdressed or vastly underdressed. The two most important garments you should have for MDI Marathon day are running gloves and a hat.(available at our expo) If the weather is in the low 50s (what we expect) You can successfully wear shorts and a singlet or another lightweight shirt. You'll know you are dressed perfectly if you are chilly standing around before the start. The addition of a hat and gloves will keep you toasty warm without a lot of added bulk and weight. If you are warm standing around you are wearing too many clothes. An old trick of the trade is to wear an old shirt or even a garbage bag to cut the wind while you wait for the start (presuming you have already checked your baggage) and 30 sec before the race starts discard your temporary costume.
Also, we love cotton shirts but they aren't great to wear during a marathon as they don't wick moisture away from your skin and turn into soggy dish rags which means you'll be wet, heavy and cold. Wait until after the race to wear your race shirt. (they look great with a finishers medal too)
What you really need is a tech fabric shirt: http://www.hoWUZit.com/mdimarathon/ and in the case of this one you can even customize it! These tech shirts wick moisture away from you and you'll be warm and look good all at the same time! Should you want to take it one step further (don't we all!) then you can even join our host running club and look like a real local, order one of our tech-fabric Crow Athletics singlets.
OK we're done with the fashion lesson back to to all things running. This mile is a test (aren't they all) After mile 18 you get a downhill followed by a left turn on Butler Rd. this short stretch is tree lined and flat. You rejoin Rt 198 (intersection of Rt 233) at approx the 30K mark. This is a great place for spectators. Another down hill followed by the start of a rather nasty climb, this hill has started to earn a nickname, granite hill (named for how your legs could (but hopefully won't) feel and for the long history of granite quarrying on MDI. Mile 19 is halfway up, you're doing awesome! Only 7.2 miles to go!
Visit the Mount Desert Oceanarium http://www.theoceanarium.com located at the end of Clark Point Rd in Southwest Harbor to learn something about our rich fishing heritage and what goes on under the waves.
