For part of the day, they were surrounded by trees and greenery, which faded as the route led them further from the lake. One of the towns the Run experienced today is Babushkin; it is on the southern shore of Lake Baikal on the trans-Siberian railway and was named for Bolshevik revolutionary Ivan Babushkin who was executed in the town in 1906. Temperatures continue to vary from daytime low 80s (F) to a sweat-freezing 30 degrees (F) at night. Although it’s cold, the team knows it could be much worse; this part of Siberia experiences extreme sub-zero temperatures (-33 degrees F) in the winter. Another highlight for Day 49 included passing through Selenginsk, home to a paper mill that is one of the l argest Russian companies: Selenginsk Pulp and Carboard Combine. Finally, the Run entered the eastern Siberia city of Ulan Ude, the last big city before the team “roughs it” in Mongolia. Don't forget to check out the Peer Water Exchange to learn about BPR's online platform that solves the problem of scale, http://blueplanetrun.org/solution/pwx. Take care, everyone, and thanks for your support!
