Your not necessary (but very appreciated) gift of a framed matted series of photographs of Joan Benoit Samuelson at the LA Games is a gift that I'll always treasure. Your toughness in finishing strong on Sunday with a painful injury is just icing on the cake to what a wonderful person you are! I'm proud as heck to call you one of my friends! Yes, I agree how can you compare the west coast (Big Sur) and the east (MDI)I've never been out there but will someday and instead of comparing us and them I'll salute what they do! We accept that runners have nicknamed us Big Sur East and it is a pure honor. Warmest Regards gary --Previous Message--
Dear Mr DeGhelder.
: Gary, staff, and all volunteers,
:
: Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
:
: I had been training for MDI for a year and
: had made it this year's destination
: marathon, a two week vacation to Maine with
: my wife Chris. We watched the days go by
: slowing anticipating our wonderful Maine
: experience.
:
: Three weeks before the race I came up with a
: heel spur and some Plantar's Faciatis (sp).
: I ran only three times in those three weeks
: including a four mile attempt through Bar
: Harbor on Tuesday before the race. I ended
: up walking the last mile back to the
: Atlantic Oakes due to the pain.
:
: I was extremely dissapointed that it looked
: like I would have to scuttle the race and
: root for the other runners. However, on
: race day I decided that I could not stand to
: watch the start of MDI from the sidewalk and
: elected to start the race and drop out when
: the pain started. After all, there was no
: way I could run 26.2 if I couldn't run 4!
:
: Thanks to Celebrex, Ibuprofen gels, altering
: my stride and foot plant, and practically
: walking the downhills, I was able to, not
: only finish the race, but finish second in
: my 65-69 age group. I was 25 to 30 minutes
: off of what I figured I would run it in but
: all things considered, I was elated to just
: finish! The award was just icing on the
: cake of a fantastic Maine experience!
:
: BTW, the age group awards are absolutely
: awesome!!! Nothing like a piece of polished
: granite to show off!
:
: Thanks again, Gary, for a fantistic marathon
: experience. BTW #2, to compare Big Sur and
: MDI is like asking which one of your
: children do you love the most. They are
: different kinds of beauty and both offer all
: any marathoner could ask for in the way of
: organization, scenery, volunteer efforts,
: and local color. If I only had two
: marathons left in me I would come back to
: MDI and Big Sur!
:
: Your marathon friend in Kansas City,
:
: Mike DeGhelder
:
: P.S. The shirts are terrific, as well!
