Claiming this, (as seen on the MTC website below) as the 78th Annual Patriots Day 5 Miler is a real stretch in our opinions. As you can read for yourself not only was it not held on Patriots day but the course was completely different and it was not even 5 miles. We think the Bangor Labor Day race should now enjoy the honor of being the oldest continuous race held in the state of Maine.
Hemphill, Reaser win
rescheduled Patriots Day race
The Portland Boys and Girls Club Alumni Association held its 78th annual Patriots Day 5-Miler about seven months later than usual after a storm wiped out the originally scheduled race, but a familiar face was at the head of the pack once again. Ethan Hemphill, 35, of Freeport, notched his sixth straight victory, this time on a makeshift course that started on the Eastern Prom Trail near East End Beach and included a loop around the Back Cove. Hemphill finished in 24 minutes, 45 seconds on a course that was likely one- or two-tenths of a mile short. Michael Payson, 44, of Falmouth finished second in 25:12, and Chris Gatchell, 21, of Portland was third in 27:17.
Christine Reaser, 41, of Dayton won the women's division in 29:33, followed by April Wernig, 32, of Portland (29:57) and Jeanne Hackett, 49, of Scarborough (30:28).
