Quotes from the official post race press conference from members of the 2008 US Women's Olympic Marathon Team and Joan Benoit Samuelson:
Deena Kastor:
"Two major goals accomplished: 1. to make the team. 2. win. I thought for many miles I may have misjudged Magdalena's strength."
"I tried to stay on 5:20-5:25 and it started to fuel my fire. Only on the second half of the last lap did I think I could win."
"I just fulfilled the second half of my dream for this race. The exhilaration of moving into the lead carries you to the finish." (On the feeling between miles 23 and 25.)
Magdalena Lewy Boulet
"Going into the race my strategy was to run 5:40 pace and stay comfortable. My husband/coach told me that the race isn't going to come to me, and that I had to go get it."
"I left Poland at age 16, moved to Germany until age 19, and to the US in 1991. I do not have a sponsor, just my husband's running store 'TranSports'."
"I knew she [Deena] was coming... just wanted to stay as relaxed as possible."
"I work full-time for the University of California as a long distance coach. My husband owns a running store. (On how she supports her family without official sponsorship.)
Question from Katherine Switzer: "You were sworn in on 9/11 in NYC, what does this mean to you?... You're the only one up there with a child, how has that affected your training?"
Answer: "I really wanted to make the team, I always look at life and jump on opportunities... Yes, I was sworn in at the Federal Building on 9-1-1[sic], we were told the ceremony would take 30 minutes and it took 10. They told us to get in our cars and go home."
"The plan was to run the pace I was running. But the plan was not to run by myself."
Blake Russell:
"I was hoping I was not in trouble at mile 21."
"My race plan was to sit until mile 17. I wasn't sure who was leading because it didn't look like Magdalena."
"I'm not concerned about the pollution in Beijing; it will be the same for everyone."
Joan Benoit Samuelson:
"Never say 'never', but I'm not sure I will train this hard again. It was a tough winter." (On whether she will run another marathon.)
"It's been a great run. I came on here in 1979, and to be able to go out there today with these three is an honor."
"It was spontaneous [as in 1979]. The Red Sox have had a lot of up and downs, and so have I." (On finishing wearing a Red Sox hat, as she did when she won in the Boston Marathon in 1979.)
Deena Kastor, Magdalena Lewy Boulet, and Blake Russell all predicted that they would be the teammates and unanimously agreed that they 'couldn't be more pleased' with the outcome.
