Planning has begun for a historic anniversary which will mark one hundred years since Maine held its first marathon on August 14, 1908. This event was held shortly after the 1908 London Olympic Games, which proved to be a significant event in the history of long distance running, where the Queen of England decided that the standard marathon should be 26 miles, 385 yards. (Note, the event held three weeks later in Maine did not follow the Queen's newly standardized distance.)
The run, to be held on Thursday, August 14th, 2008 will not be a competitive event, but a commemorative group run. Runners are encouraged to wear period-looking running clothes.

The history of the original 1908 event was lost over the decades, not to be discovered until 2005, by members of the Maine Running History team, who were researching marathon history in Maine. Several other marathons were also re-discovered in the process. Click here for more information on the history of marathon running in the State of Maine.
Caw! Caw! Caw!
