Gary,
For the last couple of years I've been biking/running to work, etc., as much as possible. Obviously this is good for the body, the wallet and the environment. However, it has made me painfully aware of how outlandish this type of behavior is to the average person in my area. The roads are not designed to accomodate this type of traffic (I'm especially referring to bicycles here) and many motorists carry a seemingly hostile attitude toward runners and bikers. It's always an adventure out there! (This is one reason why I feel we relate so well to our seldom respected brother, the Crow.)
With fuel prices climbing and climbing it has made me realize how far behind we are as a society now that human powered transportation is not just a fitness activity, but may soon become a necessity. Hopefully all future road improvements will bear this in mind-after all if we as a society want to discourage dependency on foreign oil, let's start by making running and biking more convienient and safer. Then the average citizen may become more receptive to the notion they CAN get around by means other than car. I think it will take some extremely high prices before many break their gas burning habits.
Any way you slice it, these fuel prices are going to hurt our economy badly.
Love the anti-petroleum run idea-it could be like the runners version of critical mass.
