Appearing periodically until race day, we're launching a new feature which will include a mile by mile preview of the Mount Desert Island Marathon route and strategies that will help participants successfully navigate the course. We'll also provide ideas for things to see and do over marathon week and of course, insider tips on great places to eat, drink and have fun while visiting Mt. Desert Island. Mile 12 to Mile 13.1: From Mile 12 your can almost see Main Street Northeast Harbor, it's just ahead as you bear slightly left and you'll be running smack down the middle of town! Be sure and smile and wave as there are loads of fans and support to be had and the more fun you are having (or appear to be having) the more positive energy you will get in return. This mile is fast, there is nothing to slow you down. At the far end of Main St you enter a quiet residential area featuring more glorious 'summer cottages'. You turn right and then take a quick left followed by another quick right, this S turn is fun, very scenic and a great place to put some friendly distance on a rival competitor. An old school trick is to accelerate hard as you disappear around a bend so when your competition rounds the same corner you will have gained ground on them, trust us it can be discouraging. Next you pass the NEH fleet (sailing) as we said earlier folks here take their sailing very seriously. Gilpatrick's Cove is a wonderful little salt water inlet lined with a rustic wooden fence and trees in all their fall glory. You'll climb a short but kind of steep little hill as you exit the cove Mile 13 is 20 feet before you get to the top, turning to the right Mile 13.1 is just across from a quaint while clapboard house. Congratulations you're half way done! 13.1 miles to go! And NOW the real race begins! Islander's tip of the day: 3 Recommended spectator spots: 1. Seal Harbor Beach route 3, at mile 8.3 (use the park loop road exiting at Stanley Brook entrance for best access) 2. Main Street Northeast Harbor. at Mile 12.3 (use route 233 Eagle Lake Rd, turn left on Rt 198 follow to NE Harbor, Park at Marina (left turn) and walk up Sea St to the course) 3. Rt 198 at Mile 17.4. End of Sargeant Drive (Exit NE Harbor using Rt 198 ONLY, remember the course on Sargeant Drive is closed to all traffic. Must try this: For casual dining try Geddys Pub located on Main St in Bar Harbor. For those who haven't seen it, our own Gary Allen is quoted at length on pages 104 and 106 of the just out November issue of Runner's World (the one with Lance on the cover): "HAVE FUN. 'I find that some folks are so fixated on performance, they view the daily training as stressful,'Pierce says. Contrast that with Gary Allen, who has racked up an incredible 41 sub-three hour marathons since 1978. 'When people ask me how I've done it, I say by being consistent and keeping it fun,' he says. Allen, 49, keeps his training enjoyable by surrounding himself with good running partners and by exporing new routes around his home on Great Cranberry Island, Maine. I am unsure if a MDI native has ever run faster that Evan's race at Twin Cities this morning, certainly not in the recent past, that is for sure. I know one current SWH resident (OJ Logue) has a faster PR, from Boston about 25years ago..ironically, the year Evan was born! Anything but an ideal day to run that fast, mid 70's bright sun!
