Appearing periodically until race day, we're launching a new feature which will include a mile by mile preview of the Mount Desert Island Marathon route and strategies that will help participants successfully navigate the course.
We'll also provide ideas for things to see and do over marathon week and of course, insider tips on great places to eat, drink and have fun while visiting Mt. Desert Island.Mile 26 to the finish:
The final 385 yards can be an emotional, exhilarating and a truly wonderful thing. It can be electric, exhausting, or a celebration of all you've had to endure to get to this place. In marathon running the final yards of a marathon should remind us all, it REALLY is NOT about the destination but IT IS truly about the journey. You have been on a long one and anything you feel now is all yours do with as you like, laugh cry or do what you want, you've earned it! The actual finish line is located in the heart of downtown Southwest Harbor and the warmth of our finish line teams and spectators will make you feel very welcome here. You'll all be wrapped in myar blankets as you finish and a beautiful medal will be presented to you (remember we need the timing chip on your shoe) You'll be offered food and drink and a massage inside. Your dry clothes will be waiting for you. Our finish line area is a celebration of all of your efforts! Think of it as a party thrown just for you!! Be sure and check final results, if you are in the top 3 of your age division we have an beautiful plaque waiting for you! We don't mail these so be sure and take time to check.
Oh, in case you might ask, why the extra 385 yards? You see the Queen wanted the finish line in front of the royal box for the 1908 London Olympic games and it just happened that, that addition to the route would come to precisely 26 miles AND 385 yards. The marathon distance was standardized at 26 miles 385 yards from that day onward.
( On a side note, remember what we said about Mainer's being stubborn, Maine hosted its first marathon in Aug of 1908 http://www.mainerunninghistory.org/ held just weeks after the, 'official royal marathon measurement proclamation'. Apparently folks down in Rockland Maine didn't much care for the Queens advice as Maine's first marathon was 28 miles in length.)
Islander's (MARATHONERS) tip of the day:
Wear your finishers medal and your competitors shirt to dinner or any post race festivities you might attend. The wearing of medals on marathon evening is a tradition and a nice way to identify yourselves to our islands population, and tell everyone you finished the 2006 Mount Desert Island Marathon, Congratulations!
Must DO this:
Don't forget to get your official MDI Marathon hats and merchandise right at the finish line (and at the pre race expo) and make plans to, eat and drink whatever you want on marathon night. If it makes you happy it makes us happy! See you next year!
