Hall said on a side note I fondly remember listening to the 75 Boston Marathon on WBZ radio during April vacation as Mike Westphal and I were painting under a float(dock) hauled up on the beach on Cranberry Island. The commentator was pretty excited about "Will Rodgers" who was leading the race. Mike and I were both seniors at MDIHS and I think we both decided right then and there we would run the Boston Marathon someday. We got our chance 4 years later in 1979 where Mike caught and passed a little known Maine runner Joan Benoit who was wearing that now famous backwards Red Sox hat and a black Bowdoin college singlet. Mike knew her (from her years of HS X-C and track where Mike's sister Joan Westphal was one of the few Maine HS runners ever to beat Joan Benoit) Mike said hi as he passed her. Joanie B went on to win Boston that day in then course record time.(2:34) Mike ran 2:30 --Previous Message-- |
