As we find by looking at the Maine Running History site, results as recent as the mid-1980's are not always 100% accurate. Such is the case with Boston Marathon as well. That said, does anyone know about a runner from Gorham, Lee D. Nicely, who might have run 3:30 in 1982 AT AGE 84? The BAA is trying to determine if it's real or if it was a typo. I would think a performance like this would have been statewide news at the time. See the following message. Nicely, at 84 years old, (born 1898) from Gorham, Maine, ran the Boston Marathon in 1982 in a time of 3:30:03. I have checked later results and can find no record of him. I'm of the impression that it was a typo, however, we can't delete the entry until we have more definite information. Do you have any contacts in Maine who can provide any information on him? Only two older runners I know from Maine are the Mazzeo brothers and and Carlton Mendell Thank you. Gloria ****

Steve, We have a Lee Nicely AGE 48 in 191st place on the list (below) finishing the 1982 Boston Marathon in 3:33:03. I'm pretty sure I typed this list myself from an old issue of NE Runner and will check and see if I can't see and type and may have reversed the age. steve, Directly from this http://www.mainerunninghistory.org/board/boston_80s_2.pdf issue of NE runner here is the result I think you are looking for? This page http://www.mainerunninghistory.org/board/boston_80s_1.pdf shows all Mainers at the Boston Marathon during the 80s and in 191st place is a Lee Nicely AGE 48 in 3:30:03 from 1982. Hope this is what you need and trust you can show this to whomever it may concern over at the BAA. While you are talking to them ask them if I can use my New Years Boston run as a qualifier..laugh! or at the very least ask them to come out to give me a cup of water on 1-1-2008 .....take care, hope this helps. just uncovered some more info on Lee Nicely. he is listed in the results for the National Guard Marathon trials held on May 5, 1985 in Lincoln Nebraska. Lee Nicely from Gorham Me (no age listed) finished in 136th place in 3:06:06.4 but if he was 84 years old in 1982 that would make him 87 at this event with that I believe the BAA can safely adjust their media guide. --Previous Message-- : STEVIE V.....Thought i knew my running : history, but, man that's a good one!
