sometimes it is not about WHAT you know but WHO you know. Yesterday was the lottery drawing for the 2008 ING NYC Marathon. I had already secured a spot in the race via an invitation. However Mary Ropp who litetally works her butt off for little thanks to help make running better for many of us had entered thru the lottery. This morning she found out she did not make the cut. It was her hope to run her 1st marathon down in NYC and she was sad but content to wait and try again in 2009. Anyway I got a second invitation from a major ING executive about an hour ago, to attend as their guest. I told them I was already entered but asked if my invitation could go to Mary who is very deserving of this. They said yes they would be thrilled to have her and she is now entered as a special guest of the title sponsor, ING! Mary will have her work cut out for her, but if there is one thing I know about her is she doesn't quit. Good work Mary looks like Mount Desert Island will be will represented again!

How freaking unreal!!?? Needless to say, I've got my work cut out for me! I couldn't even sleep last night, I was so excited. This is just what I've needed... so excited! Gary, THANK YOU so much for making this happen for me!

M, You'll have a blast... I found this out last year @ NYCM; despite not feeling well it was a WONDERFUL experience. Make some memories. As your first marathon it'll be one you'll NEVER forget!! thank yous are not necessary Mary...as I've always believed those who are deserving always get their just rewards...you have earned this and more! I have little doubt that you'll cross the finish line in Nov...keyword for you is 'consistancy' for the next 2 months. Then we'll adjust. The recipe to getting there is: run every other day as little or far as you feel like, and add 1 mile to your sunday runs starting with your longest current run. Mary-- Just a further note to echo what is being said. I ran New York last year for the first time (it was something like my 12th marathon in all) and it was an amazing experience. I see that Roger got in as well, so you are going to have plenty of company. All best wishes. I still can't believe that my brother got one under his belt before I did. However, unlike him, I plan to toe the line with some training and common sense! I couldn't be more happy than to make my marathon debut at Fred's race -- just too cool for words! caw! caw! caw!
