cool stories Bob, I really want to get Amby to come run the new years (cold) Boston Marathon. His conflict is that John J hosts a new years day run in CT that goes from his house to the ocean (for an optinal swim) aand back. I told Amby if he came to run BAA I'd go with him to do John Js run after. I know that you're enjoying the sun down there but you ought to come up on 1-1-09 and join us! I'll be sure this story gets added to MRH even though its a NH race. It is still classic stiff involving a great Maine runner. cheers --Previous Message-- : (1968) Every Columbus Day in October, : Manchester,New Hampshire would hold their : annual New England AAU 15K Championship; : great prizes; honest competetion & flat : as old beer for the first 5 1/2 miles (hills : galore thereafter)---Didn't check to see @ : the starting line who was there...Just as : well...After finishing 9th the year before : (Ralph Buschman, Ken Mueller, Graham : Parnell, ETC.)& a 29:56 time trial (6)@ : Colby College 2-weeks before, i was ready.. : I took off so fast that Tony Sapienza : thought i had won it... hit 3 miles in 15:10 : & the crowd was telling me i had a big : lead....A few minutes later Jim Keefe : (Ranked #1 in U.S. 3 miles in '63) & : Amby Burfoot (no intro needed)go by...@ : least i can get 3rd, right? & a nice : prize...WRONG!!! @ almost 8 miles & : "rung out", John J.
