The Acland family were very large landowners in Devon - at one time it was said that they could go from coast to coast without leaving their own land. Their records are held at the Devon Heritage Centre in Exeter. Being so close they probably did know their tenants at Broomhill
Tithes were originally a ten per cent levy to the church but over time became complicated and disputed - thus the tithe act of 1836 and the subsequent maps were produced.
