Joan: My commission expires next month.
This is what you wrote:
"This information is for renewing CA Notaries who's commission expire in 2008.
1. If your commission is expiring in 2008 and every year after, you must have your fingerprints taken and forwarded to the CA (DOJ) and the FBI. "
This is from the letter CPS recently sent me about with my exam results:
"All applicants who pass the exam are sent the live scan form, which is enclosed with this letter.
Those notaries seeking reappointment with no break in service or with a break in service of less than
six months are not required to have their fingerprints taken and may disregard the live scan form."
So which is it? And this doesn't even address the photo issue. You said:
"3. Beginning Jan 2008 when a CA Notary renews you will have to be fingerprinted and a new picture sent with his/her application sent to our Sec Of State to renew a license."
Of course, you said "beginning in 2008 when a notary renews"; most notaries whose commission expires in 2008 started the renewal process a long time ago. And all these requirements were passed AFTER renewing January notaries applied for new commissions and took the test. CPS provided me with an application form which they stapled to my test form. They gave detailed instructions on how to fill out the app, they checked our photo IDs against what we had written on the app and sent the app to the SOS.
There was never one word about any photo.
I feel like I'm trapped in a time warp. Like I said, I hope SOS gives priority to Jan - and probably Feb. - renewing notaries, if they indeed put new rules in effect that apparently have yet to catch up to CPS, which is supposed to be handling all this.
And by the way, COSTCO will take color 2x2 photos for less than $5 and my local sheriff's branch will do fingerprinting for both DOJ and FBI for about $35, so it might pay to check around if you want to and have the time.
