I'm in the same boat as you, here in San Jose, CA. My commission expires 2-3-08. I will wait for the letter from the SOS for renewal instructions. If they need me to submit a photo and get fingerprints on top of filing a new oath and bond, I will comply at that time.
Any time new law changes take place, there seems to be some confusion. I will make sure I'm using the new Jurat and ACK, but other than that I'll do a wait and see.
I'm just hoping I don't have a lapse in between. I did take the test a little late on October 27th. They say at least 16 weeks in advance. It's going to be tight.

: Hi, Joan (and others): I can't seem to
: get my point across, so I'll try
: again, hoping some other January
: renewing notary in the same boat as I
: am might respond: When we started the
: renewal process earlier this year, the
: new legislation that now applies to
: all 2008 notaries WAS NOT EVEN PASSED.
: We were operating under the old rules.
:
: In other words, the rules changed for
: us midstream. More bewildering, CPS
: was never notified, either. CPS took
: our applications without any mention
: of photos and just recently sent us
: test-result letters saying we did NOT
: need new fingerprints.
:
: I called CPS and they told me they
: still have not been notifed by SOS of
: any changes to anything and that it is
: up to the approved classes to tell
: notaries to provide photos and that
: they need fingerprints. But no class
: told us about any of this because we
: took classes and tests just before the
: new laws were passed.
:
: Also, CPS said that even now they
: aren't collecting photos at test sites
: to send in with the apps. CPS also
: told me they will continue to send
: letters throughout Dec. saying
: notaries DON'T need new fingerprints
: because the SOS told them they
: couldn't change that part in the
: live-scan letter until next year.
:
: January notaries and probably Feb. and
: March ones - now will have to play
: catch-up, it appears. But I haven't
: received a letter from the SOS telling
: me that the old renewal rules we were
: following at the time were just that
: - old - and that they need more stuff
: from us.
:
: So, all I'd like to know is if any
: others who read this board have
: received letters from the SOS about
: this cos I'm worried about a lapse
: before the SOS can get all this worked
: out.
:
: As far as the cost of fingerprinting,
: I may have spoken too soon. This is
: what I paid four years ago. Still, the
: base price is $32 PLUS whatever
: rolling fee the vendor charges. As I
: recall, I got a tip that this little
: sheriff's substation down the road did
: it for less, so that's where I went.
: The price has probably gone up like
: everything else, but when I find out
: I'll report back. (Costs will apply to
: NorCal, not SoCal, where everything is
: more expensive anyway.) Also, the
: convenience of getting fingerprinting
: and photos during a class is worth
: whatever price. I was trying to help
: notaries like me who now have to
: scramble to get this done.
