Good advice. However, I would go even further and recommend that you do the research before you invest any more time or money in classes to make sure that this is a good business plan for you in the current market and that it will help you meet your goals. The pablum that the NNA and some other organizations put out there about there being an "urgent need" for NSAs is sadly just a marketing come-on to sell their classes (imho).
Do your homework and prepare a business plan, and as JanK/ca said, learn your notary stuff inside out first. And by the way, with business as slow as it is, don't put your hopes on your competition showing you the ropes... It's just not a realistic expectation. There are some, however, who will - for a fee (as it should be) - offer mentorship.

: Jacque, before getting into the loan
: signing business, please perfect your
: skills as a notary. You stated you
: are a new notary, so first and
: foremost it is important that you know
: all your notary laws and how to
: perform general notarizations. And
: after you are confident in your notary
: skills, please take a loan signing
: class or educate yourself on doing
: loan signings BEFORE you venture into
: the loan signing world. Read all the
: notary boards you can find; this will
: give you insight as to what is going
: on in this industry. Experienced
: signing agents who have done this for
: many years have had to find other
: sources of income as the mortgage
: industry is crippled and struggling.
: Please do your research. I don't want
: to discourage you but this is just the
: worst time to get into this business.
: I wish you luck if you do decide to
: pursue this career. It can be very
: rewarding.
