It's good to know I wasn't the only one who reacted that way... 
That kind of situation could possibly be prevented by setting some ground rules (and possibly a time limit) before everyone does introductions. I belong to another networking group that meets weekly and we have a timekeeper who makes sure no one gets carried away. It's a very different kind of gathering, but it's a thought...
