This is a retort I get more times than i should because many notaries are still out there notarizing in names that may be on docs but do not match the ID., i.e.,more than whats on the ID, or with a middle initial thats different. If you call, they will insist on you doing it wrong 'because the lender wont accept it any other way'. Too bad for them. Which leads me to another point- if they need a copy of the ID to do the loan, then it is THEM who must collect it BEFORE docs are drawn, NOT the notary at the last minute. It is a practice that violates my values and views on privacy- anyone else agree? Curious. Just took the renewal exam and the course nor the test mentioned anything about this. They did however say that putting false info on a cert is a felony ($10,000) fine. The key words here being MORE THAN and DIFFERENT. This to me is fundamental in notarizing. In this case if I can reach someone I call and let them know. There are many different ways they want you to deal with it making the correction, initialing it or not etc. The only thing we can do is have them sign as aka connnecting the two names. But it is practicing law if we tell them to do it this way, so I phrase it "many people have done this as aka and doesnt seem to be a problem and it is the only legal way I can notarize your papers, because ultimately I can only notarize in the name which appears on your ID. Two credibles is no good in using a non family member like a neighbor. How many of your neighbors know your true middle name or initial? None. Sometimes I just leave the appt. I dont need the headache.
