If this becomes necessary, I tell the borrower that I can take a photo with my digital camera and then print it out back at my home office. I have never had anyone say no. I always delete it off my camera and my computer after I print it out.
Some notaries absolutely will not take photos of ID because they don't want to possibly be accused of identity theft. I always ask borrowers to make a copy and only offer the digital photo option if I need to.

: Question: I was an escrow officer so i
: always made copy of the borrower's ID
: and kept it for myself. This was very
: useful when the lender requested copy

: Agent, you may ask the borrowers to
: make copy of their ID, but what if
: they don't have access to a copy
: machine or they forget?
: Is it ok to take picture of their ID
