There are many times the stated job isn't what it turns out to be and a renegotiation with the hiring agency is necessary. Most, if not all of us, have been there and done that.
The point we're trying to make, is you don't hold the documents hostage in the negotiation. The job is done, the docs get returned. Period. The mere mention of "I held the docs hostage for a better fee." implies that you threatened the hiring agency with the docs. Hopefully that is not what your intentions are/were.
Once the job is completed, the docs need to be sent to the title company, lender, or whoever, per your instructions. Renegotiation of your fee is carried on, post signing, without regard to the docs being returned.
