This was Kelly’s email to me after she accepted the job:
Hi Steven-
In our phone call, you indicated the doc set was, "only about 80 pages". 104 X 2 is a lot more than 80 pages. Two sets are printed and I'm looking forward to meeting with your client's signers at 5pm this evening.
Steven, I don't do business based on BS. I'm sure you won't mind if I say to you that after this job, I'd rather not do business with you again since my personal success has always been based on honest relationships. Truth is what puts money in the bank for the long haul and since like attracts like, it's clear we're not a good match.
Kelly, the package was 104 pages, and I told you it was 80 something. In Fl, LA, GA, KY, OK, TX and MS the rest of us have an 80-84 page package for helocs, depending on the lender. So your complaint is that CA has 20 more pages at .02 per page. My apologies I didn’t realize CA was so different. One would think CA would have FEWER docs so as not to harm the environment and all. Tree Hugging, Eco-Liberals and Socialistic people and all out there.
Also, you only had to print the FIRST 52 pages of 104 to have the customer sign and return, the rest were sample docs. If you made 2 ENTIRE copy packages you are not very bright. You are one of those people who hit the print button and walks away. I understand you also had to make a full copy package for the customer, but don’t you normally do that anyways? So you are complaining because you had to make about156 total pages. 156 would be an average closing. Poor thing, it must be a terrible thing to have to print so much. You talk about honest relationships and BS to me but you don’t tell the whole story. Please tell everyone the entire story not just your slanted view. So in closing you are complaining about having to print 25 extra pages, get a grip. You should have called me back and told me you didn’t want to do it, something came up. There are hundreds of us notaries out there looking to do jobs. And ones who won’t complain about 25 extra pages that didn’t need to be signed.

: Actually, Wendy I haven't been slow at
: all because I have more than a few
: things going for me. First of all,
: while other people are being forced to
: take J-O-B-S, I have my
: "other" business that I have
: owned since 1992 and second, I'm not
: just sitting around and posting
: "is it dead all over? or "my
: phone isn't ringing?" I've become
: quite selective in the signings I will
: take and who I will work for and turn
: down far more than I accept. While
: others have lowered their rates, I've
: done just the opposite and have raised
: mine, because my costs continue to
: rise and I do know my business bottom
: line and profit margin.
:
: I don't have to hold documents hostage
: for more money because when I quote my
: rates, I've already allowed for all
: the "what if's" and the
: "everything that can go wrong
: will go wrong" signing scenarios.

: Has it been to slow for you lately?
:
: --Previous Message--
: BTW Wendy, when a signing goes perfect
: and takes less time than anticipated,
: do you renegotiate your fee with the
: TC/SS for a lower fee?
:
: --Previous Message--
: The time to negotiate fees is *before*
: the signing -- not holding the
: documents hostage for a better fee
: *after* the signing. I suspect this is
: the case because why would you hold
: the docs hostage before the signing
: when all the TC, SS, etc. would have
: to do is find another signing agent to
: carry out the signing.

: Anybody who actually knows me and has
: worked with me understands my
: position. It is not unprofessional to
: expect SS and title companies to pay
: us for us services in a fashion that
: meets our needs as well as the
: borrowers' need to have the loan close
: on time. Do you really mean that you
: have NEVER called an SS or title
: company to renegotiate your fee after
: finding out that the signing was
: either more complex or included other
: loans in the package? I find that
: very hard to believe. We are small
: business people and it is our duty to
: ourselves to make sure that we stay
: afloat. It is not unprofessional to
: watch our bottom line and not let
: others take advantage of us. I have
: never been accused of delaying a loan
: or causing a problem. You sit very
: highly perched on your branch of
: "professionalism." You
: really shouldn't cast stones where you
: don't have all of the information.
: That in itself is not a very
: professional stance.
:
: --Previous Message--
: To even imply that you hold documents
: hostage - regardless of the amount of
: time done so -reflects on
: unprofessionalism and is totally
: unacceptable.
:
: --Previous Message--
: Regardless of what Paul says, I have
: often refused to send docs back if the
: SS or lender has not been truthful on
: their end of the deal. I always get
: the fee renegotiated before the
: shipping deadling for that day, so
: they aren't late, the loan closes on
: time, and I don't feel cheated on my
: end.
:
: --Previous Message--
: They must have meant the loan amount!
:
: --Previous Message--
: Don't you have this kind of false
: truth?
: I had an SS tell me that it was a
: "little HELOC", only to find
: out it was a Countrywide with 104
: pages. I held the docs hostage for a
: better fee. My fee was raised and
: they went out same day as if I'd never
: had the problem. You would think that
: now since things are slow that the
: SS's would start being truthful and
: keep us moving in a straight line.
:
: --Previous Message--
: My heads up for this company: What I
: was
: told on the phone ("about 80
: pages") turned out to be 104.
: There was no misunderstanding - the ss
: sent the docs to me himself so he knew
: better.
