    Hacking

Posted by Godders on 18/12/2023, 22:50:43

Someone, or something has hacked into our family email address and has been changing passwords and email addresses so we are gradually losing access to various accounts including Microsoft, EA Sports, Netflix, Facebook etc.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a mobile or recovery Email linked to you family email, if so its a fairly simple process.

If using a wind9ws 10 or 11 pc the antivirus is pretty good. Run a full scan

            Instuctions here
            https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/stay-protected-with-windows-security-2ae0363d-0ada-c064-8b56-6a39afb6a963

            Download malwarebytes https://www.malwarebytes.com/

            And run.

For all of your accounts not compromised generate new passwords using a password generator. Bitwarden is a good open source manager,

Is there a common device on which all of the accounts are accessed ? If so start with that.

Could be a phone or a tablet that's compromised. If you can reset all mobile devices to factory default so that all apps etc are deleted. Could be someone has installed a dodgy app.

Probably not a good idea with a chromebook. It doesn't say for chromebook anywhere and I don't think a CB is classed as a tablet. If an app is not in playstore or appstore it is probably best avoided.

                Thank you very much.

                Will this work for Chromebooks?

is it an old chromebook that no longer received automatic system updates. Have you downloaded something iffy lately?

Can you contact the helpdesk for your email provider and the other services? You’d hope they could lock them down and then release back to you

I'm kind of hoping that someone might be able to advise on some anti-virus, spyware, malware or whatever it is (I really don't understand these things) that can remove the malicious software wrecking havoc.

plenty available in playstore. eg bitedefender and the current version of chrome has good protection. You could always powerwash your chromebook and then do a password change on all your applications,

I powerwashed my patio, does that count?

A powerwash will restore your chromebook to factory settings and will also reload your various apps automatically
