    Driving at Night

Posted by Captain Pugwash on 20/12/2023, 11:05:22

I've been doing quite a bit of this recently and notice that car headlights are brighter than they used to be.

When I say brighter, I mean really dazzling, as though people are driving with full beams. The cars with white lights seem to be worst as opposed to those with dull orange or blue timted lights.

Has anyone elae noticed this or is it me getting old?

    Is it as

A combination of getting old and newer LED lights are making no longer fun for me.

I agree CP. Some vehicles lights on dipped still seem to be very bright indeed.

With more driving in the dark this time of year, it's amazing that so many vehicles have defective lights or even ones that are out completely.

Perhaps get an eye test to check for early onset of cataracts?

I have same problem and also I find it harder to see in poor light conditions. Was told that I might need an operation within the next ten years to replace my eye lens. Routine day case.

I have a yearly eye test and I do not even need glasses for reading let alone driving.

              Seconded.

Just back from the opticians who told me the same - and mentioned dazzling car lights/night driving in that context.

He also identified a floater, Floater!

Same problem with me, and I am very old. I lost an eye caused by blood clot from AF but can read the bottom line of the eye chart with glasses and the line above without. This means that I pass ok for driving, but since the loss I now hate night driving.

That and the popularity of SUV’s. Lights are set higher. Particularly noticeable in your rear view mirror when you’ve got one behind you.

The Xenon/HID bulbs used in a lot of modern cars are much brighter than older type bulbs.

CP is right, they can be horrible coming at you, particularly on a bumpy road…

And with modern manufacturing tolerances the dip-beam cut-off is so sharp that there's little or no graduation between one's eyes being above the cut-off and below it, giving the eyes zero time to react to the change between looking at a beam of light and looking into a beam of light.

And back in the day, there was a limit on the wattage allowed. The 160W main beams of the inner pair of lights on my Opel Manta were definitely illegal. And add that to the 130/90s of the outer pair...

Don't know whether there is still a limit.

I had a Calibra that had shocking headlights.

Don’t know if they were all the same, but on dipped you may as well of had a couple of candles up the front for all the good they were.

Not the same. Mine was an Irmscher twin-headlight conversion from Steve Thompson Cars, to which I added uprated bulbs. Probably much the same effect though. Almost like daylight with 380W on main. Go to 180W on dip and suddenly the world vanished.
