New spending cap in prem
Posted by Northeasthatter on 29/4/2024, 16:29:06
I see most prem clubs have agreed to a spending cap which means that it will benefit the big 6 or 8 clubs who will always spend big now every season
It's the biggest spending clubs that have voted against or abstained actually (City, United, and Villa against, Chelsea abstained).
I don't think a fixed spending cap is the right way forward. I don't much care about a "level playing field" - it's never going to be the case that Man Utd and Burnley have the same financial power and never has been.
The problem that needs to be fixed in my opinion is the unsustainable debt-fuelled spending, signing players with money that doesn't exist, like Everton and Forest have done. That's what leads to clubs potentially going bust, creditors being ripped off etc.
PSR as it currently is is the right rule. Stupid that it's being scrapped in favour of a cap instead.
A problem with PSR is because it's based on an adjusted profit measure it's open to using loopholes to manipulate the result. E.g. how much really is spent on the youth team, women's team or infrastructure that is allowable under PSR? Or Chelsea just sell a hotel to a related party to get around the rules.
It's better in my view to have a narrower focus based on player costs. I'm sure there will be more attempts to find loopholes (image rights perhaps), but overall it limits the potential for manipulation.
Whether the limits are set well and any punishments are a deterrent is a different matter.
It won’t be that limiting on the big clubs though and will basically be irrelevant for a club like us. It will likely be 5 x the TV revenue of the bottom club which would have been over £500 million if in place for last season. Only Chelsea would have been above it with only Man City of the other clubs anywhere near breaching it. The % of turnover rules will also still be in place, so still doesn’t give free rein for clubs with wealthy backers to spend huge amounts.
