Financial doping doesn’t count as cheating

Posted by Town planner on 1/5/2024, 16:00:37

Seems to be the line from Notts Forest and Everton fans

I don’t get it, surely it gives the same advantage over rivals as say bribing a ref would (which Forest fans still go on about from 40 years ago), or a cyclist taking PEDs.

Its f@cking cheating, what’s difficult to understand about it.

Both clubs would have significantly weaker squads had they played by the rules that other clubs stick to.

I'm not sure I would say Forest doped rather than they breached it just by overspending and then claiming certain expenses and costs should have been categorized differently, similar to the arguments made by Everton.

Whereas real dopers, like City and Chelsea are more sophisticated in they've artificially inflating the value of their sponsorship deals,( easily done when the club and sponsor share the same ownership under a sovereign wealth fund) and / or in Chelsea's case allegedly paid their managers higher undisclosed amounts than reported to circumvent restrictions.

Sorry, but what exactly is financial doping?

It’s a play on doping, as in professional athletes/cyclists/swimmers etc taking performance enhancing drugs to gain an unfair advantage.

Except its done through financial means. Every club signs up to the rules and knows exactly what they are, but authorities take very little effective action which just encourages further cheating.

If Forest stay up it will be the equivalent of Lance Armstrong getting a 1 second penalty on his TdF time but keeping the title.

          Yep.

Straight comparison is Forest and Sheffield United. Both sides got promoted but needed to rebuild their squads after losing key players from the promotion team. Forest splurged against the rules, signed 30 players and just about survived relegation. Sheffield (so far as we know) kept within the rules and played the hand they were dealt fairly. Relegated with 3 games to go.

Yeah look at the economics of Chris Wood – hardly a world beater but a useful player to have in a relegation scrap.

            2022/23 loan fee - £4 million
            Transfer fee - £15 million
            £100k/week for 18 months - £7.8 million

Probably another million in there for agent fees bonuses, but you’re looking at a cost of £350k/week for just one player.

Out of contract in June, but wouldn't have much of resale value anyway.

            Like Manchester City for example?

If you like but I’m referring to the bottom 6-8 clubs which were our rivals for staying up.

If some of them cheat then it massively distorts the competition.

Obviously financial doping distorts the top end too, but I hope City win it forever to show what a sh!t show the PL is – at least until the top 6/7 fook off to Globo Franchise league.

Somewhat ironic that Forest complain about their points deduction when their own strikers have probably cost them the same number of points in recent games.

Last minute goals have cost them four points in games against us this season which is a "six point swing" when you take into account the two points that we gained.
