Re: Just watched Our Kind of Traitor...
Aubrey Longrigg was very much a background character in the book. Listening to the audiobook read by the late Robin Sachs, I was convinced that the role for Jeremy was Billy Boy Matlock, but the trailer made it seem as if that character, played by Mark Gatiss, had less impact in the screenplay than in the book. Was that the case? (I won't be able to see it here in the US until July.) Once it was established that JN played Aubrey Longrigg, the screenplay would have had to beef up the role quite a bit to make it worthy of him. BTW, I see no reason why JN should be relegated to character and supporting roles just because he's over 50. His piers - Colin Firth, Hugh Grant (yes, I include him - comedy is just as much an art as is drama), Daniel Day_Lewis - are still playing lead roles without having to put on superhero costumes. The films might not have the accompanying blockbuster financial success (Colin's Kingsman excepted), they're still doing fine work. That's what I wish for Jeremy.
